| My mother always thought I would be an actor. I loved the idea of becoming someone else, of feeling the world the way another would. My earliest memories are of acting out Thumbelina with a friend as we listened to the story on the record player, pretending to be in music videos and choreographing dances for the neighborhood kids. Throughout elementary school and junior high I was mostly involved in dance. Ballet, Jazz, Spanish, Salsa, Disco... I don't think I remember a time when there wasn't music and dancing at my house. I often remember dancing disco with my brother and salsa with my Mom. I have to admit that during high school I lost some of my passion for dance and the arts in general. I found books and math more rewarding. Music was always important though, and in high school it was more important than ever. Music was my way of becoming someone else, of feeling everything life had to offer. I didn't play an instrument at this time, although I did know how to play the piano, but all my friends were musicians. When I graduated, I thought I would become a lawyer. During my freshman year at Boston University, I quickly learned that my chosen path was not the right one. As I examined my life, I realized that there was one thing that was constant throughout the years, music. I turned to it when I was sad, I used it to express extreme joy, all my friends were musicians; music was integral in my life. The problem was I was not a musician. How does one make a life out of music when they don't play an instrument well? Enter the University of Miami and the amazing program from which I graduated. After coming back home to Miami, I realized that the best school for what I wanted was in my own back yard. UM offered a Bachelor's of Music in Music Engineering and Electrical Engineering. This was a way for me to combine two passions, math and music. It was the most challenging and rewarding three years of my life. I had to be a musician, piano and voice, and be an engineer at the same time. I could go on forever touting how wonderful this program is, but suffice it to say that I was recruited to Seattle, WA and have been working in the high tech industry combining music and computers ever since. Although I love my career, I always felt that there was a void in my life. In 1999 I met a wonderful man. He also works in the industry and is a wonderful pianist and composer. Every time he played the piano, I cried. I cried because I didn't have any other way to let out those emotions that he so beautifully put into his compositions. I had given up the piano long ago, no longer danced and didn't really listen to music. After a few months I realized that this void was starting to take a real toll on me and I decided to sign up for voice lessons. With the help of my music fraternity, Sigma Alpha Iota, I found an amazing teacher that helped me find my true voice. It was with her encouragement that I decided to take the leap and really become an actor. I started taking dance lessons again, experimenting with various types and added acting lessons with a wonderful coach. Going out on the first audition was hard, but once I did it I found the experience very freeing. It didn't matter if they cast me or not, I was doing what I had always wanted to do. Today I continue to take all types of lessons, workshops and classes. I've been in several plays, musicals and films and look forward to more. Although I love performing, what I love most is the research, preparation, and rehearsals in order to get ready. Those parts give me the opportunity to combine all the elements of my life, as I become the character. I also have an Event Production and Artist Booking agency called Infinite Connections, am Teacher, Ritual Master and Kabbalist in the lineage of King Salomon and am a performance piercer for CoRE. I thank all the people in my life for believing in me and supporting my art and most of all I thank my Mother for planting the seed, Jeff for giving it water and sunshine to grow, Jesse, Osiris, Xavier, Jesiah and my entire tribe for providing the nutrient soil. © 2008 yvette Soler.
